Database migration – moving data from old sytem to new

Database migration - move data from an old database to a new database

Project

The client was struggling with an old Access database system which was no longer met their business needs. This legacy system was limiting efficiency as a lot of old redundant information persisted, it was slow and often crashed so was not reliable, and was not set up in such a way to capture the information and store documents in a way which fitted their modern way of working.

The client made the decision to purchase access to an industry-standard application used by peers in their field.

Data cleanse and migration

Assistance was requested to move the data from the old system to the new.

Transitioning the data included:

  • data cleanse to remove old redundant data and ensure consistency in the format of the data,
  • mapping the data between old and new systems, and
  • sense check of the data after migration to the new system.

Fresh modern data application

The successful migration allowed the client to:

  • Improve reporting to external bodies as current reliable information could be obtained quickly without manual intervenation
  • Improve efficiency as all client files are now stored in a more structured way
  • Less frustration for staff as the new system is faster and more reliable.
